To host the exhibition of Marco Romano was dismantling the art gallery

The museum, housed in the ancient Palazzo della Prepositura, is divided into two collections: an archeological section and an art-history section, an integral part of which is the works in the adjacent Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta.
Starting in the 1960s, the painting gallery was created around a core of paintings coming mainly from the Collegiate Church and other churches in the vicinity. In 1988, for the first time, in conjunction with the exhibition Casole d’Elsa and its Territory, a display was mounted of art works and furnishings, which since 1995 has made up the museum’s permanent collection.
After the show devoted to Alessandro Casolani in 2002, as a result of far-sighted acquisitions by the municipal administration and generous long-term loans, the museum was enriched with a substantial group of paintings and drawings to display alongside the witty predella of the Mysteries of the Rosary, the only work by this local painter present in the museum since its foundation. Other new acquisitions provide evidence of the activity of Casolani’s “extended family”: his two brothers-in-law Cristofano and Vincenzo Rustici and his more gifted nephew Francesco, concluding with some examples of the work of his son Ilario.
